Chicago Fire: Dick Wolf says new show will be ‘iconic’
Dick Wolf has claimed that his new show Chicago Fire has the potential to become “iconic”.
Wolf told reporters at the Television Critics Association Press Tour that the firefighter drama follows in the tradition of NBC “platinum dramas” like ER and his own Law & Order.
“These shows [have] never written down to the audience,” he said. “It all goes back to the writing. There’s never been a good show with bad writing, and there’s few bad shows with good writing. Quality does out.”
Chicago Fire – which stars Jesse Spencer (House) and Taylor Kinney (The Vampire Diaries) – will be a “character study”, Wolf insisted.
“There are very few franchises or areas that give you the opportunity to really explore character,” he said. “[This show] is a canvas for good writing. And writing that you haven’t seen for a while on network television.”
However, Wolf ruled out contemplating a Fire franchise comprising multiple series in a similar vein to Law & Order.
“With a first-year show like this, you aren’t thinking of the future, you’re thinking about survival,” he explained.
Chicago Fire premieres on October 10 on NBC.
