Alex Ferguson facing FA probe after criticising linesman

The FA has asked Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to explain the comments he made about match official Simon Beck, after Sunday’s game against Tottenham.

Ferguson has accused Beck of failing to award Wayne Rooney a “clear” penalty during the 1-1 draw.

“Why he never saw the penalty kick on Wayne Rooney and some of the other decisions… I think he had a shocking game today. I’m disappointed in his performance, I really am. I think he had a bad game.

“He had a really poor game,” added Ferguson.

Ferguson quickly went on to point out a previous incident United had with Simon Beck when United were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea in April 2010.

Despite Chelsea striker Drogba looking offside, Beck allowed the goal which proved to be the winner, and it proved a pivotal moment in the title race, which Chelsea would eventually win.

“I am disappointed with him [Beck] – we have not had a good record with him,” Ferguson said.

“With Chelsea a couple of years back, he gave onside to Didier Drogba and he was three yards offside. You remember these things because it is in important games and that was an important game.”

Ferguson has until 6pm on Thursday to get back to the FA with his observations.
