Champions League: Jose Mourinho proud of Chelsea after win over PSG

Jose Mourinho has said he is proud of his Chelsea side after their 2-0 UEFA Champions League quarter-final win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Te Chelsea manager believes his side gave “absolutely everything” in their 2-0 quarter-final win.

After a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the Parc des Princes in the first leg, a late Demba Ba goal sent the Blues through on away goals – setting up their seventh semi-final in 11 years.

Mourinho was full of praise for his team’s battling performance and believed that a collective team effort was a key factor in their triumph over the Ligue 1 side.

“They gave everthing. Even in some difficult moments of the performance, they gave absolutely everything,” he siad.

“I promise you, to play against Lucas is not easy, to play against Cavani is not easy, to play against Lavezzi is not easy.

“My four defenders, as always, were brilliant but the midfield worked like animals and David Luiz was a monster.

“And the people in attack, some of them tried to create and they were the ones – when it was time to go for the physical game and to use your body – who were brave and Fernando (Torres) and Demba gave a big help to the team.”

With Chelsea moments away from exiting the competition, Mourinho opted for a direct style of play and believes that it ultimately reaped the rewards.

“We risked everything,” he said.

“Demba, Nando and Eto’o all played together and we tried to play direct because our midfield were really tired and broken, but also because Paris were in that situation and we know that they are not adapted to this kind of football.

“In France, they completely dominate and the style of French football has nothing to do with this direct approach.”

The Portuguese boss also revealed his concerns over the injury to winger Eden Hazard, who was replaced by goalscorer Andre Schurrle after just 18 minutes.

When asked whether the Belgian was OK, Mourinho responded: “No. He’s feeling something in his calf and he was saying that he couldn’t go on.”
