Jay-Z to drop Rita Ora from Roc Nation label
Jay Z is set to drop Rita Ora from his Roc Nation label.
In response to Rita’s lawsuit against his record label, Jay Z has now counter-sued the British singer.
The rap mogul has filed a $2.3million lawsuit against the singer, who he signed back in 2008 before promoting her as the next big thing.
In the lawsuit, Roc Nation is poised to ‘release’ her from her contract as an end to their long-running dispute.
It comes after The X Factor judge, 25, filed a lawsuit last December claiming they had not released her new material that she had ready for her second album, according to TMZ.
Roc Nation claims it signed Rita in 2008 when she was unknown and invested millions in her career. In return she had to deliver 5 albums, but the label says it only got one – her debut album Ora was released in 2012.
In Rita’s original lawsuit in December 2015, she claimed she completed new music for her second album but the label hadn’t released it, instead focusing on representing other acts on its roster.
But according to Roc Nation’s lawsuit, the label has already spent more than $2.3million on marketing her second LP and the point of the lawsuit is to get the money back, writes TMZ.
The singer’s attorney Howard King, claims Jay Z’s already promised to release Rita from her contract, and this could mean the lawsuit could just go away.
King told Page Six: “Jay Z has personally and graciously promised Rita complete freedom from Roc Nation, the details of which are now being finalized.
“We believe that Roc Nation’s distributor, Sony Music, has required Roc Nation to file this action to preserve whatever rights Sony might have pending resolution.”
