FA to explain Capello exit at press conference

The Football Association will explain, in more detail, the reasons behind the departure of Fabio Capello as England coach at a media conference today.

The FA announced on Wednesday evening the shock departure of the Italian as coach, after he tendered his resignation during a meeting with FA chairman David Bernstein and general secretary Alex Horn.

Capello’s offer was accepted and confirmed by the FA during a brief statement, when they also confirmed a media conference with Bernstein and the Club England Management team will take place at their Wembley HQ at 12 noon.

Italian media are already suggesting that Capello quit in anger at the FA’s decision to remove the captaincy from John Terry last week.

Capello spoke of his annoyance at Terry’s removal on Italian TV, which prompted his meeting with Bernstein and Horn on Wednesday.

Capello’s son Pierfilippo insisted on Wednesday evening that his father had not given any interviews following his resignation as they had an agreement with the FA. Capello was pictured leaving his London home early on Thursday morning.

Successor

Bernstein and his fellow members of Club England’s management team will no doubt be fielding questions about Capello’s successor during the conference, with Harry Redknapp odds-on favourite for the role.

In a huge coincidence, just hours before Capello’s resignation, Redknapp was cleared of tax evasion at the high court following a three-week trial.

Redknapp’s current club Tottenham have already refused to comment on the intense speculation that is already surrounding their manager.

England’s next game takes place at the end of this month against Holland, and it is widely expected that Bernstein will confirm a caretaker will be appointed to take control for the match at Wembley before a permanent appointment is made ahead of the Euro 2012 finals which begin in June.
