Andy Murray pulls out of French Open with lower back injury

Andy Murray has withdrawn from the French Open due to his continuing lower back problem.

The British No 1 pulled out of last week’s Rome Masters at the start of the third set with Spain’s Marcel Granollers with back pain and after visiting with specialists on Monday and Tuesday Murray has decided that it is too much of a risk and will rest.

“After consultation with his team and medical specialists, Andy has reluctantly withdrawn from the French Open and will instead focus on preparation for the grass court season,” a statement read.

World No 2 Murray himself added: “It’s a really tough decision and I love playing in Paris, but after seeking medical advice, I am not fit to compete.

“Apologies to the organisers and thanks to everyone for the messages of support. Now my complete focus is on getting back on the court as soon as possible.”
