Batman: The Dark Night Rises – DYRT Review
The Dark Night Rises is the final chapter in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. We have watched how Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) rose from despair when his parents were murdered while he was a child, to his journey of self discovery and his quest to find out who he was. As well as honing his fighting skills, Wayne started his crusade of protecting Gotham City in ‘Batman Begins’. The second installment was ultimately the the pick of the bunch with the introduction of the villain of all villains – the charismatic enigma that was The Joker – played by the late Heath Ledger. The battle between Batman and The Joker was a thing of beauty, with Heath’s portrayal of the Joker showing aspects of pure genius at times.
The final movie is set 8 years after Batman, The Joker and Harvey Dent battled it out on the streets of Gotham. Billionaire Bruce Wayne has become a recluse, forcing both Wayne and Batman into retirement, hiding from the world in Wayne Manor.
Gotham City has become a safer, quieter place to live since the ‘Dent Act’ put the city’s criminals behind bars, leaving our hero – Bruce Wayne – battered and bruised, struggling to find the purpose of his life and his place in the city he once gave his all for, still has a need for the masked crusader.
Enter Gotham City’s reckoning – Bain.
The character of Bain (Tom Hardy) was mesmorising from the outset – a character of pure evil – unstoppable and more terrifying than anything in your worst nightmares.
Causing mayhem with incredible mass destruction of un-imaginable magnitude – armed with an army of underground warriors set on taking on Batman and destroying Gotham city. Football pitches falling from players very feet, death defying airplane escapes and killing people with his bare hands – let’s just say you wouldn’t want to bump into this guy in a dark alley.
This installment of the trilogy, also sees the return of a certain sexy cat burglar, played by Anne Hathaway. Catwoman – previously played by Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Return back in 1992 – plays cat and mouse with The Dark Knight, proving herself a powerful player in the male dominated battle – all while wearing a tight black leather outfit and spiked heeled boots.
The Dark Knight Rises was certainly a fitting finally to this quite immense twist on the Batman franchise, moving us away from the cheesy comic book style movies from a couple of decades ago. Christian Bales portrayal of the saviour of Gotham City has been the best by far with this new dark edge and real hard hitting acting and plots, the way Bale took the role to a new level has to be commended. Bales Dark Knight will be sadly missed from our cinema and tv screens.
A must to go and see at the cinema.
