Brits 2013: Emeli Sandé and Ben Howard take home two gongs each

 

The best of UK music was on display at last night’s Brit Awards which saw Emeli Sandé and Ben Howard led the way taking home two gongs each.

Scottish singer, Emeli was named Female Solo Artist and scooped the award for British Album for her disc Our Version of Events, at the glitzy bash held at the 02 arena.

Ben Howard also enjoyed a double celebration at the ceremony picking up awards in the British Breakthrough Act and British Male categories.

Emeli won the first award of the evening and was presented with the Female Solo Award by Taylor Swift, telling the crowd: “This feels amazing. This is incredible I am so happy to win this award.”

“Thank you to everyone who has allowed me to win, thank you my family.”

Later in the show Emeli spoke of her delight and said the evening “a dream” as she picked up her second award of the evening.

Giving an emotional speech she said: “I think I’m a very lucky pop star. This is an album I wrote because I didn’t have the strength to say these things. The fact that people have connected with these songs doesn’t make me feel so lonely.

“Thank you to everyone who has bought this record and who has made me feel like I’m part of something bigger. This is a dream. I’m so thankful for this year and for this award.”

 

Ben Howard won two awards as well scooping the British Breakthrough and British Male gongs

Ben Howard was the big male winner of the evening winning British Breakthrough Act and Best Male Act.

The 25-year-old, accepted the Breakthrough award from Nick Grimshaw before admitting he was fazed by public speaking, saying: “I’m not very good at speeches I’m not very good at dancing.”

He thanked Radio One for supporting him, before making a swift exit from the stage.

Ben was then announced winner of the Best British Male gong.

The London-born singer accepted the award from Ed Sheeran and he told the events: “That’s bizarre isn’t it. I didn’t really expect. I was shocked to come to the awards so to come away with two of these

“It’s a real privilege.”

Speaking at the Winner’s press conference a little later, he sad: “I was a little shell shocked to win.

“This is definitely the cherry on the cake.”

“The year had ended, the album had been so much more successful than we’d ever thought, to be nominated for the Brits in the first place was amazing, and to actually come away with these two is bizarre, I think is the best way to describe it.”
