Chelsea captain awaits MRI scan following knee injury

Chelsea captain John Terry will today, undergo an MRI scan on suspected knee ligament damage amid fears he faces a lengthy spell out of action.

Terry, back after a four-match domestic ban, scored before being taken off in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool after an accidental collision with Luis Suarez.

“We’ll know the extent after the scan,” said Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo.

“It was great to see him back and leading the team out and we just hope it is not a serious injury.”

Having experienced the joy of giving his side the lead in the 20th minute, Terry was soon in obvious agony following the collision and was carried off. The 31-year-old left Stamford Bridge on crutches with his right knee in a brace.

“When a player like John reacts like that you know it is a painful one,” said Di Matteo.

“When he started the game he scored the goal and showed the qualities he has. He showed his experience and influence. It was a real shame he had to come off.”

After being pegged back by Suarez’s headed equaliser, Chelsea are now three points behind leaders Manchester United and Di Matteo was disappointed they did not secure all three points after dominating large portions of the game.

He said: “We knew we needed to score a second goal to kill the game off and we had the chances to do that. We had opportunities and their goalkeeper Brad Jones made some great saves.

“We needed the second goal to win it and at 1-0 it is always dangerous.

“We are still playing well and creating chances. We just need to be more clinical in front of goal.”
