Everything you need to know about the Apple iPhone 5S

The iPhone 5S is coming and its packed with a host of new features.

We know you’re all desperate to get your hands on it, so before its September 20th release date, DYRT have put together everything you need to know about the new Apple addition.

Design

The 5S looks quite similar to its iPhone 5, although a few slick additions have arrived. First of all, we have an updated range of colours: black, gold and moon grey.

You’ll notice that the Home button looks a tad different too. It now has a silver-rim and is free of any icon as Touch ID is introduced (more on that later).

Specs

The biggest upgrade to the iPhone 5S is the new 64-bit A7 chip – a smartphone first. This will make the handset’s performance and graphics twice as fast as its predecessor, Apple claims.

Its new architecture has support for OpenGL ES version 3.0 which will help deliver better graphics.

Apple’s A7 processor will also be joined by an M7 motion coprocessor. It is essentially a motion sensing chip that will come in particularly handy with fitness apps.

The usual 16, 32 and 64GB variants will be available, while Wi-Fi support and Bluetooth 4.0 are also on board, as well as up to 13 LTE support.

Screen size for the iPhone 5S is sticking at a 4-inch Retina display.

Security

The niftiest new feature to come to the 5S is a fingerprint sensor known as ‘Touch iD’.

A single or multiple users can load in their fingerprint onto the device, eliminating the need for old-fashion four-digit passcodes. The sensor is built into the Home button, with a detection ring which activates the security feature.

What’s more, you can enable fingerprint locks to other services, such as logging into the App Store and making an in-app purchase.

Camera

The 8-megapixel camera has improved on the iPhone 5S, helped by the new A7 processor.

An upgrade to a five-element lens with f2.2 maximum aperture won’t change photo quality much, but it’s an improvement nevertheless.

The sensor area is also 15% larger than the iPhone 5.

Burst mode allows the iSight camera to capture images at 10fps, while slow-motion is finally available, capturing 720p video at 120fps.

A True Tone dual-LED flash will enable better colour balance as one is white and the other is a warm amber.

iOS 7

Of course, Apple’s new operating system iOS 7 is on board. This means a refreshed user interface will grace the iPhone 5S.

It’s worth adding that Siri has also been updated, meaning you can search Twitter. You can ask what anyone is saying and Siri will read out their latest tweet.

The 64-bit processor will boost several new features, including Control Centre, Notification Centre as well as improve Multitasking and AirDrop.

Cost and availability

The suggested retail pricing for the 16GB model is £549, while the 16GB and 32GB versions will come at £629 and £709 respectively.

Nine countries will be first to get the phone on September 20, including the UK, US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico and Singapore. Pre-orders will begin on September 13.

Plus, Apple intends to sell the handset in 100 countries by December, giving many a chance to get their hands on the latest tech.
