Georgina Lennon :: Aimee McWilliams...
Scottish designer, Aimee McWilliams made a triumphant return to colour at Glasgow’s first fashion week on Saturday evening. To look at her flawless designs you would never guess that 26-year-old Aimee was only three-years out of design school.
She graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London in 2003, and within a year of launching her own label, her designs were being sold in the lucrative Harrods stores.
Despite high acclaim and job offers from John Galliano and Roberto Cavalli, Aimee is still a homebody at heart. “The best thing about showing in Glasgow is that my wee granny was in the front row,” smiled Aimee. “She won’t come to London so it’s great for me to have all my family at a show.” Aimee was named Designer of the Year at last years Scottish Fashion Awards, and it’s clear to see why.
Her designs are rich in colour, flawlessly cut and exude wealth and extravagance. “I’d say this collection is a real return to colour for me,” says Aimee. “In previous seasons I’ve used much more tonal colours.” “I got a lot of my inspiration for this collection from the moods in music and films, particularly movies like Casino. “I also like to play around with different aesthetics and colour pallets to see what works best,” said Aimee.
Aimee has already worked with some big showbiz name, designing outfits for the Rolling Stones and Oasis tours. In fact her uncle, Alan McGhee, was the indigenous who discovered Oasis. Aimee comes from a very unique, multi-talented family. Her father does special effects on James Bond and Harry Potter movies, her mum was music PA to Sir Elton John and her sister-in-law is Hollywood actress Naomi Watts.
So why did Aimee choose the uncertain path of fashion designer? “I have always been fascinated by the female body,” explains Aimee “Just the way women look, from tip to toe, no two women are the same.” “Whether it was a sculpture or life drawing I was doing, it was always very design orientated,” added Aimee. Aimee teamed up with ALDO footwear again for this show and says that it’s not just the clothes that matter. Hair make-up and footwear all have equally important roles to the overall collection. She added: “ALDO have a certain look to them that really suites my designs and they’re a really great company to work with.”
Although Aimee’s career has been full of success, she admits it’s been a lot of hard work and should only be considered if you have something different to offer. “If you really believe your signature is unique and different from anyone else’s then you should go for it, but if it’s not then don’t because it’s just too hard to survive,” said Aimee.
Next Aimee hopes to increase her number of stock lists, particularly on an international level and branch into menswear. She also has a BBC documentary based on her career coming out shortly. “I have a lot of exciting projects to look forward to and am really excited about what the future holds.”
