Georgina Lennon sits down with Rocks player Graham Hunter...
He and his brothers used the old bin as a basketball hoop, long before he became part of Scotland’s only Pro Basketball team, the Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks.
Graham Hunter (24) from Rutherglen, says it’s an honour to play for the Rocks and is happy to be back home playing in his own country.
“I’ve been travelling for seven years now and have played for a different team each year, so am grateful for the opportunity to be back home playing at such a high level.”
Graham has worked hard to get to where he is and is the first to admit he couldn’t have done it without the support of his family, particularly his dad, who he counts as his all-time hero.
“My family have always been there supporting and encouraging me to do my best and just go for it. My mum and dad always put themselves second. They made sure that I got to practice on time and that I always aimed high and believed in myself.” Said Graham.
His older brothers, Colin and Stewart used to give Graham a bit of a hard time and usually beat him at just about every game or sport going. Determined to one day beat them, Graham practiced day and night, tying to perfect his game, which paid off and he got his basketball scholarship in 2003.
“It was a very proud moment when I was offered my scholarship to East Durham basketball academy. I really felt like I had made it and all my hard work was beginning to pay off.”
If he wasn’t a player, Graham would have been a fire fighter.
“I really like the idea of giving something back, said Graham. A career in the service would be fulfilling and positive.”
Although it’s doesn’t involve running into burning buildings, Graham gets the chance to give a little something back to the young fans by doing coaching with his Rocks team-mates. The guys promote healthy lifestyles, with the support of Scottish Sports Future, to school kids throughout Glasgow, teaching them about basketball, healthy eating and the hazards of smoking.
“It’s really a great thing the Rocks are doing. It’s definitely worthwhile and when you know you’ve made a difference, even to just one kid, you feel good too,” explained Graham.
When he gets some time off, Graham loves nothing better than watching cartoons and listening to music.
“I’m a homebody at heart. I love chilling out with family and getting a good home cooked meal from Nadine (my girlfriend).”
Graham is looking forward to the rest of the season and has high hopes for the BBL Finals.
