Man United sign Sergio Romero

Manchester United have signed Argentina international goalkeeper Sergio Romero on a three-year contract.

Romero, whose deal with United includes the option of a fourth year, moves on a free transfer from Italian side Sampdoria after his contract there ended.

He was previously signed by United manager Louis van Gaal for AZ Alkmaar in 2007 from Racing Club.

Romero has also turned out for AS Monaco and has won 62 caps for his country, playing in last year’s World Cup final defeat to Germany in Brazil.

The 28-year-old has joined up with Van Gaal’s squad for the last part of their pre-season tour of the United States and could play some part in Wednesday’s final friendly there with Paris Saint-Germain.

Romero comes in as back-up for David de Gea as things stand but that could change in the future, with Sky sources understanding United are resigned to losing De Gea, either this summer or in 2016.

Romero told the official Manchester United website: “I am absolutely delighted to join Manchester United. To play for the biggest club in the world is a dream come true for me.

“Louis van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this new and exciting challenge in my career.”

Romero’s recruitment comes as United remain in a stand-off with Madrid over their pursuit of De Gea.

Van Gaal told Sky Sports News HQ: “With the threat that David de Gea is going to Real Madrid, we had to prepare our season.

“I think Sergio Romero can fulfil that because because you have to handle quickly what may happen with David de Gea. I think he is a very good choice.

“He is the Argentinian goalkeeper. He has international experience. I know him very good because I picked him when he was 19 years old to AZ Alkmaar, my former club.

“I know him. I also know his character so I hope he can have a contribution to our selection and I have confidence he can give that.”
