Mariah Carey has announced she will be leaving the American Idol judging panel to embark on a world tour.

The star retweeted a message from her publicists PMK•BNC confirming that she will be stepping away from the Fox talent show for her first tour since 2009, although no concert dates have yet been announced.

“Mariah Carey is a true global icon – one of the most accomplished artists on the planet – and we feel extremely fortunate that she was able to bring her wisdom and experience to the American Idol contestants this season,” said Fox and Idol co-producers FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment.

“We know she will remain an inspiration to Idol hopefuls for many seasons to come.”

Nicki Minaj has also confirmed her exit, taking to her Twitter to announce that it is now “time to focus on the music”.

“Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn’t trade it for the world! Time to focus on the Music!!! Mmmuuuaahhh!!!” tweeted Minaj.

American Idol broadcaster Fox and producers FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment also thanked the musician for her contribution.

“Given her extremely busy career, we understand and respect her decision and wish her the best.”

Fellow judge Randy Jackson has already confirmed his departure, and Keith Urban has said that he has not heard anything about his own place on the show.

Jennifer Hudson has apparently signed a deal to join the series next year, with the network said to be considering a judges’ table made up entirely of ex-contestants
