Meet the Newbies from Beaver Falls
The second season of E4′s drama series Beaver Falls is back tonight (Monday) at 10pm.
Flynn, A-Rab and Barry are back, along with some new faces, ready to pick up where they left off as the lovable rouges that always come good in the end – no matter what sort of mess they get themselves into.
Mac – played by Tom Austen
An intrinsically decent, charming and open hearted product of small town America – Mac is straight out of a Bruce Springsteen song. In contrast to Bobby & Jake, Mac’s an American male adult at Beaver Falls who isn’t slightly unhinged. He’s a real sports star – basketball is his game – but unlike the other Jocks on camp he feels no need to prove his masculinity through aggressive, jock-like behaviour. Not the sharpest tool in the box, but possibly the nicest.Oh… and he’s Rachael’s husband.
Hope – played by Emer Kenny
Slightly ditzy, always smiling, possibly a bit try-hard but completely unthreatening, right? … or maybe not… because beneath the façade Hope is insecure to the point of being slightly unhinged and utterly ruthless when it comes to getting what she wants: namely A-rab.
So, on first look Hope is likable, concerned about everyone’s welfare, a good listener and always up for fun… Howver, beneath the chirpy exterior, lies something a bit darker. Her desperation to fit in, fed by her critically low self-esteem, and a secret jealous obsession with Rachael soon consumes Hope. Fearing her now boyfriend A-rab still harbours residual feelings for Beaver Falls’ original good girl (Rachel), It soon becomes clear that Hope is someone who’ll do whatever it takes to get what she wants – lies, manipulation, snitching, threatening the campers.
PJ- played by Scarlette Alice Johnson
PJ is Bobby & Pam’s daughter- the initials stand for Pamela Jefferson Junior. PJ is a single-handed rebuke to anyone who dares to suggest that Americans don’t get irony. She’s very sarcastic, with an uncanny knack for seeing through bullshit and calling people on it. She’s adventurous, and spent last year backpacking around Europe (hence why she wasn’t here in series 1…) She’s also wilful to the point of self-destructiveness – tell her not to do something or someone, it only makes her want to do it or them more…
She has a lot of success with the opposite sex, gets bored easily and is constantly on the look-out for new adventures. When she first meets Flynn she finds him attractive, but finds his attempts to chat her up risible. Something Flynn really isn’t used to. He really can’t work out if she’s an interesting challenge or just waaay too much like hard work.
Meanwhile PJ’s relationship with Pam is incredibly strained: they haven’t had a civil conversation for three years. PJ knows it’s partly her own fault, but she just can’t help feeling resentful about Pam’s many failings as a mother. And she finds it impossible not to remind Pam at every available opportunity. PJ hates the way Pam treats her father – particularly the affairs Pam has so close to home. She knows about her mother’s penchant for younger men and thinks the guys she sleeps with are complete losers. Be interesting to see what happens if she ever finds out that Flynn was one of them….
