NFL: Tim Tebow released by New York Jets

Tim Tebow’s time with New York Jets came to an end on Monday when he was released from the team.

General manager John Idzik and head coach Rex Ryan informed Tebow of their decision when he showed up for work on Monday morning, as the headline-grabbing quarterback’s unsuccessful stay in the Big Apple was ended.

Tebow’s move the Jets raised more than a few eyebrows, and he threw just eight passes for the team and ran the ball 32 times as the experiment of pairing him with Mark Sanchez failed dramatically.

The Jets sent two Draft picks to Denver in exchange for Tebow last off-season, and although they got the press attention they were seeking it was for the wrong reasons as they suffered an awful season.

The Jets kept hold of Tebow throughout the NFL Draft weekend in the hope of using him as part of a trade package, but when they picked up quarterback Geno Smith in the second round his days were numbered.

“We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow,” Ryan said in a statement. “Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped.

“Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward.”

Moving on will now be a tough prospect for the former Florida Gator star, despite his remarkable play-off run with the Denver Broncos he never really received any plaudits for his skills as a quarterback.

The signing of Peyton Manning meant the end for Tebow’s chances as a starter, and the former Heisman Trophy winner moved to New York.

Tebow will struggle to find another team to now pick him up on waivers due to his salary, and will be hoping to impress someone enough to take a chance on him as a free agent.

Rookie Smith now seems in a straight shoot-out with Sanchez for the starting job in New York, with Sanchez himself possibly being the one to leave if he did not have such a huge contract.

A return to his beloved Florida with the Jacksonville Jaguars has long been talked about, although Dave Caldwell has publicly ruled that out, with teams like the Patriots, Redskins, Seahawks among other credited with an interest.

There is also talk that Tebow will need to change his position in order to get another team, with running back, receiver and even tight end being mentioned as alternatives.
