NFL: Week 1 Round Up

A sloppy performance from New England Patriots saw their game against Buffalo Bills go down to the wire, but the pats managed to secure the victory late in the fourth quarter. Wide receiver Danny Amendola gave New England fans some cause for optimism as he had a strong debut.

Seattle Seahawks took a while to get going but QB Russell Wilson eventually led the Seahawks to a narrow 12–7 lead over the Carolina Panthers.

The Chicago Bears managed to get the W over the Cincinnati Bengals despite their top class wide receiver A J Green posted a striking 162 yards and 2 touch downs.

Miami Dolphins took the victory from a lacklustre Cleveland Cavaliers with the Dolphins’ $60 marquee signing Mike Wallace expressing some annoyance at only getting 15 yards on 1 reception in the match, essentially being used to draw coverage to open up other receivers.

Mike Wallace: “It’s not my game plan”

Detroit Lions came out on top against Minnesota Vikings despite superstar running back Adrian Peterson getting 3 touch downs starting with a 78 yard scoring run on AP’s first carry.

Detroit’s new RB Reggie Bush had an impressive game with 191 yards in combined offense including a receiving touchdown that sprung from a short pass from Stafford which Bush took for 77 yards.

Indianapolis Cot’s beat Oakland Raiders for a final score of 17-21 and Kansas City strolled past Jacksonville Jaguars in a near blowout with Jacksonville only managing to gain 2 points from a safety, the match finished 28-2.

Tennessee Titans closed down the Pittsburgh Steelers offense and recorded a surprising win over the Steelers which ended 16-9.

The New Orleans Saints managed to hold on against Matt Ryan’s Atlanta Falcons, the Falcons came painfully close to winning the game at the dying stages of the match but was unable to cross the finish line with the W, Falcons fans will no doubt be reminded of a similar situation in last year’s NFC championship game against the 49ers.

Tampa Bay gifted a win to the New York Jets and rookie QB Gino Smith as linebacker Lavonte David committed a senseless personnel foul by pushing the Jet’s QB when he was already out of bounds, the 15 yard penalty moved the jets into field goal range and Nick Folk kicked a 48 yarder for the win.

A shoot out between Aaron Rogers and Colin Kaepernick saw the San Fransico 49ers edge past Green Bay Packers to record their first win of the Season.

Kaepernick recorded his first 400+ yard match and hooked up with new signing Anquan Bolden for over 200 yards and veteran tight end Vernon Davis for a pair of touch downs.

Controversially Packers hit man Clay Matthews tackled the 49ers QB out of bounds which caused retaliation from some of the San Francisco guards.

In an interview on ESPN Radio Matthews had cagily talked about targeting quarterbacks in order to break up the read option offence that troubled them last time these teams met and so tensions were high even before the late tackle was made.

Clay Matthews dives at Colin Kaepernick in the second quarter
Clay Matthews: “You want to put hits as early and often on the quarterback and make them uncomfortable”

Elsewhere the St Louis Rams managed to end their season opening slump and beat the Arizona Cardinals 24-27 and the Dallas Cowboys defeated the New York Giants 31-36 in a high scoring match up in Arlington, Texas.

Monday night football returned with a double header where the Philadelphia Eagles held on for an impressive win over the Washington Redskins and the Texans clinched a late victory over San Diego with a field goal in the dying moments of the game.

The much anticipated return of RG3 had the Redskins crowd in fever pitch at kick off but it wasn’t till half way through the third quarter that the QB found his rhythm.

On the flip side Eagles QB Michael Vick started very strong and was backed up by an incredible running game from veteran LeSean McCoy.

That’s week 1, see you next week for more action on the gridiron.
