R-Patz makes first TV appearance since affair scandal
Robert Pattinson squirmed his way through an interview last night on The Daily Show as host Jon Stewart attempted to extract information on his break-up with Kristen Stewart.
The Twilight actor made his first televised appearance in front of a live audience since news of his girlfriend’s infidelities with married director Rupert Sanders broke at the end of last month.
While it was presumed the 49-year-old host would be banned from asking awkward questions, it seems he managed to worm the high-profile topic into conversation.
The interview began with Jon masking the serious undertones of the information he was fishing for, casually asking: ‘So, what have you been up to?’
R-Patz seemed thrown by the question, claiming: ‘I thought we’d already prepared this. I had a joke prepared! I was all set up and ready to go. Now it’s meaningless.’
But Jon jumped in with a tub of ice-cream, in a bid to mimic a girly gossiping session, saying: ‘We’re just a couple of gals talking.’
Still unsure how to act, Robert continued: ‘This is how you got me on the show… This is the problem with actors, in every awkward interview situation… ‘
He soon tails off as Jon rescues him by diving in with a joke about the melting ice-cream tubs: ‘Here’s the problem with my show, we don’t have a freezer!’
Back on track, Robert faffs around with his spoon, saying: ‘I’m trying not to eat this as I’m going to split my spanx. I’m double spanxed!’
After a few laughs from the audience, Jon steered the conversation back around, saying: ‘So what are we doing here? I’m worried about you. Are you alright?’
Pattinson immediately deflected the question, referencing his melted ice-cream: ‘I literally don’t know how to approach this now.’
He continued: ‘This is the weird things about these interviews, and now I’m going to sound like an idiot, but my biggest problem in my life is that I’m cheap.
‘I didn’t hire a publicist and every awkward interview, most actors have things scripted. I’m going to hire a publicist.’
Trying to bring the chatter around to Kristen again, Jon teased: ‘The last time I had a bad break-up, Ben & Jerry’s got me through the tough times, so I thought you and I could talk about things?’
Putting on a camp voice, he then joked: ‘Boy, you are better off without… so kick her to the curb!’
While Jon was clearly desperate for a lifeline or exclusive quote, Robert remained poker-faced and revealed nothing about the status of his relationship.
However, he proceeded to talk about his upcoming film, saying: ‘If any Twilight fans are tuning in, I genuinely want to make Cosmopolis have a higher opening weekend than The Dark Knight (Rises).
‘But it’s only released in six cinemas so it’s going to be a challenge. Just buy eight tickets each!’
