Tiger Woods named PGA Tour Player of the Year

Tiger Woods has been named PGA Tour Player of the Year for a record 11th time.

Despite not adding to his tally of 14 majors in 2013, the world no1 enjoyed an excellent time on the PGA Tour with five victories from the 16 events he started. 

The PGA Tour Rookie of the Year was won by Jordan Spieth.

The 20-year-old American capped a hugely promising season, which saw him win the John Deere Classic in July and amass nearly $4m in earnings, by finishing runner-up in the season-ending Tour Championship.

“I had a number of chances to win some tournaments. I won five, which is, I think, a pretty good year. I’ve done that a few times over the course of my career,” said Woods.

“I wish I would have been a little more consistent in some of the events, but overall, at the end of the day, to add to the win total for the year, it’s always a good thing.

Woods failed to add to his total of 14 major titles this year – his last win coming in the 2008 US Open – and admitted getting closer to Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 is one of his biggest targets for 2014.

“I think the same (goal) for me as Jordan was saying is to do a little bit better in major championships,” added Tiger.

“I’ve put myself there with a chance on the back nine on two of them, and wish I could have done it on all four.

“But the same goal each and every year is to win at every event I tee it up in. That doesn’t change. That’s been my goal since I turned pro back in ’96. I’ve had a decent winning percentage, but sure would like to improve on that.”

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said in a statement: “Tiger’s five wins came against some of the strongest fields in golf including the Players and two World Golf Championships while Jordan’s rookie season was historic in terms of his accomplishments for a player just 20 years old.

“The member vote reflects the respect their peers have for both players.”
