US Open: Andy Murray pleased with win against Michael Llodra

Andy Murray eased his way through to the next round of the US Open after thrashing France’s Michael Llodra 6-2 6-4 6-3 in New York yesterday.

The third-seeded Scot struck an impressive 35 winners and made just five unforced errors in the one-sided encounter as he demolished Llodra on Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Murray’s only lapse was when he allowed the Frenchman to break his serve in the second game of the second set.

The 26-year-old admitted he just wanted to get through the match following four hours of rain delays at Flushing Meadows earlier in the day.

“It was a long wait to get on,” he said.

“I just wanted to try and get off to a good start, which I did luckily.

“He played well at the beginning of the second set by coming up with some big shots. He’s very flashy, very unpredictable and he strung three or four games together.

“I had to stay strong in the middle of the second set and once I weathered the storm, I played better.”

Talking about his physical fitness during the match, Murray said: “I thought I moved well and I thought I was very solid. I gave away very few unforced errors which is important.

“I want to build myself into the tournament. I don’t want to play low percentage tennis.

“I gave myself a lot of margin, hit quite a few winners and I passed well tonight, so that was a good start. I’ll try and play better in the next round.”

His second-round opponent will be Leonardo Mayer of Argentina.
