Wayne Rooney confident England will keep their cool ahead of Scotland clash

Wayne Rooney is confident his side will be able to keep their cool when they take on Scotland at Celtic Park tonight.

The England captain is expecting a hostile atmosphere when they take on Scotland tonight for the first time since 1999.

Rooney, who has played for Manchester United against Celtic at Parkhead and also attended a number of Celtic matches at the ground, said: “With the history between England and Scotland, it will be an intimidating atmosphere.

“The atmosphere when you walk out is incredible and you know every tackle, every challenge, the fans are going to get behind the Scotland team. We have to be ready for that and I am sure we will be.”

Rooney is confident the England players will not give Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson an excuse to wield his cards.

He said: “We have to play the game within the rules. I don’t think it’ll be like the games 20 years ago.”

Rooney is also looking forward to locking horns with his Manchester United team-mate Darren Fletcher.

Fletcher is set to start in Scotland’s midfield after battling back to fitness following a debilitating bowel disease.

“It’s incredible for him to be back playing and to be back in the Scotland team,” said Rooney of Fletcher.

“It shows the character he is, the type of person he is.

“He doesn’t miss a training session. He trains really hard, so I’m really pleased he’s managed to come through. He’s back fit and ready to play.

“Obviously, we speak about the game and he’s playing for Scotland and I’m playing for England.

“We’re great friends off the pitch, but for 90 minutes we’re opponents.”
