Wimbledon 2013: Andy Murray eases through to second round
Andy Murray eased through to the second round of Wimbledon with a 6-4 6-3 6-2 victory over Benjamin Becker.
The British No 1 was broken once in the opening set but completely overwhelmed his German opponent as he completed the Centre Court victory in an hour and 52 minutes.
The win will see the Scot clash with Yen-hsun Lu, and has also seen Murray surpassed Fred Perry’s British men’s record total of 106 match victories in grand slam tournaments.
The second seed looked completely comfortable on the surface as he broke for a 3-1 lead in the first set.
He had two points to make it 5-1 but could not take either and subsequently dropped serve as Becker clawed his way back into the set at 4-4.
Battling back, the home favourite upped his level again to force two set points, taking the second and the set 6-4 when Becker scrambled a backhand wide.
The second set went with serve to start with but Becker’s resistance cracked in the eighth game as a wild backhand gave Murray a 5-3 lead, and he clinched the set in the following game.
There were no wobbles from Murray in the third set as he began with a break of the Becker serve to well and truly kill off the contest.
Becker battled on to save two break points in the seventh game but could not fend off a third as a shanked forehand left Murray serving for the match.
“I thought it was a good match and it was a good start for me,” said Murray.
“He played some solid tennis, especially the first two sets, and then the third set I started to play better.
“It was a tough start for me, he is a very good grass player. I was ready, and to win in three sets was a good start.
“There’s always nerves at the start of a Grand Slam and I’m glad to get it out of the way, and hopefully I can improve as it goes on.”
